1861 **150th anniversary** The USS San Jacinto stopped a British steamer, the RMS Trent, and removed two Confederate diplomats en route to Britain. The event, known as the Trent Affair, threatened to bring the US and Britain to war during the US Civil War.
1961 **50th anniversary** An Imperial Airlines plane carrying US Army recruits crashed near Richmond, Virginia. Only two people aboard the flight survived.
