1982 **30th anniversary** Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the 14th Street bridge and the Potomac River just after taking off from Washington-National Airport. Seventy-eight people died in the disaster. On the same afternoon a Metro train crashed at the Smithsonian station killing three people.
