Friday Bonus

For this week’s Friday Bonus I thought I’d share a personal example of how a typo from the 1950s has an impact on a transportation document in 2021. Years ago I went to the Vital Statistics Department in the city where I was born to get a copy of my birth certificate. As I examined the document, imagine my surprise when I saw “Female” typed in the box for my sex! I went back inside to point out the mistake but was told I would need a doctor’s note and possibly a court order to change the designation. A few years later, when I needed to renew my driver’s license, I brought the birth certificate to the MVC. Dutifully copying the information from my birth record, they handed me my new driver’s license with an “F.” Oh well, Bernie could be short for Bernadette, right?
