Tuesday Transportation Oddity
For approximately 14.5 miles a single roadway provides the western spine of Manhattan from the Battery to the Bronx. TCN reader Sam Schwartz submitted this as the urban roadway which, perhaps, has the most names in the shortest stretch.
West Street, West Side Highway, Route 9A, 11th Avenue, 12th Avenue, Joe DiMaggio Highway, Lincoln Highway, Henry Hudson Parkway, and Henry Hudson Bridge. In addition a portion of the roadway was previously known as Miller Highway and a portion was also informally called Death Avenue because of the railroad tracks which once ran down the street. A real urban cowboy preceded the train to warn drivers and pedestrians of the approaching locomotive.
