Tuesday Transportation Oddities

Often in the TCN you’ll see stories about electronic toll collection. Whether it’s by transponders or license plate-reading cameras, the collection of the tolls requires no interaction between driver and toll collector. The Dingmans Ferry Bridge, which crosses the Delaware River between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, is a throwback to a different time. Not only is there nothing electronic about the toll collection, there’s not even anything mechanical. The toll collector stands between the two lanes and collects the money or tickets by hand. The bridge is one of the last privately-owned toll bridges in the US. The toll is $2 in each direction.
